language should be learnt by using it and the lesser the dependence on textbooks the better.i am not saying that great writings in a language should not be read.appreciating good works is one of the goals of learning language other than communicating.
learning a language say marathi can be freed from a monopolistic hegemony like that of people from Pune who claim whole and sole ownership and rights to define what is "correct" marathi.
this can be achieved by making children realise the diversity of the language by interaction with people speaking different dialects.
e.g. children may be asked to ask a particular set of questions to these different people

its 5 in the morning.i had thought i would go to sleep early tonight. i am not telling this to you because i am good at planning (rather executing it) or i am fond of planning. its because i am trying hard to kick smoking. guess exercise will help and i can try to regularize my life a bit.
but friend of mine chose this day to run away from home. so came back late after all the tata-goodbyes and then watched "spanish connection" - jackie chan 80's movie with couple of friends.nice movie.
